Notes on News

NOTES ON NEWS

Define “Broadcast Journalism” in 1-3 sentences.
Broadcast has 3 main forms to instantaneously broadcast information. Television, radio, and internet.
Journalism is reporting curretn events. For example, newpapers.


List and describe the six criteria of newsworthiness.

TITLE DESCRIPTION EXAMPLE
1. Unusualness: News is the different, the unusual, the out of the ordinary. Unusual is more often found in bad news. Example: Church roof collapses.

2. Significance: Important events that affect many people. Example: Taxes, elections, wars

3. Timeliness: Old news isn't news: its history. Example: People want to hear about the fllod that just happened, not the month after.

4. Proximity: People want to know about Nearby events. Examples: Local school gang activity, new state tax law.

5. Prominence: When well- known people, buildings, or places are involved, that is news. Example: If Zac Efron is arrested, its news.

6. Human Interest: Stories about ordinary people or animals, humorous or dramatic. Heartwarming or Heart-wrenching stories. Example: Fire man saves a cat that was up in the tree.
